USP purified water · Root cause analysis training

Thirty days of water system data. Nine things went wrong. Can you find them?

A hands-on root cause analysis challenge built on a simulated purified water loop and its plant historian. You get the trends and a description of the system. There is no alarm log and no shift notes, just the data and engineering first principles.

What you get

  • A simulated USP purified water loop. RO/EDI makeup, an ozonated 10,000 L storage tank, a VFD distribution pump, a heat exchanger, UV ozone destruct and points of use. 32 tags and 5 control loops on an interactive P&ID.
  • 30 days of historian data per dataset at a 10-second scan, with the things real historian data has: instrument noise, swinging-door compression, quality codes, a communication outage, a stuck reading and spikes.
  • Nine hidden faults, from a pump trip to a drifting ozone analyzer and a leaking check valve that lets water into the ozone cell. The controllers hide most of them. There are also events that only look like faults, such as the nightly ozone sanitization.
  • Scoring and the full answer key, with an operator's walkthrough of the evidence for every fault.
  • Unlimited new datasets. The same nine root causes in a new order and at new times, so you can practice again.
  • CSV downloads to work the data in Python, Excel or your own tools.

Who it's for

Quality, engineering and operations people who look after purified water systems, and anyone learning to do root cause analysis from historian data.

Inside the challenge

P&ID of the simulated purified water loop with live instrument readings
The P&ID shows every instrument's reading at the moment under your cursor. Click an instrument to trend it.
Historian trends of tank level, supply temperature, tank ozone, ozone generator output, supply conductivity and return flow during normal operation
Normal operation, from the baseline period. Grey bands are weekends. The spikes every night are the planned ozone sanitization, not a fault.
